Skanem’s History – from metal cans to connected labels
In the late 19th century, the Norwegian industry for canned fish products grew rapidly. In the Stavanger region alone, there were over 60 canning factories. To cater to the growing demand for tin cans, Skanem was founded in Norway by Albert L. Barstad, Halfdan Abel Lunde and Robert Paul Richard Scholz as Stavanger Bliktrykkeri og Maskinverksted. The company was later popularly known as ‘Blikken’.
The business achieved rapid success and growth. The number of employees grew from 30 in 1905 to 300 in 1911.
The company was a pioneer in innovations and owned 10 different patents.
Stavanger Bliktrykkeri og Maskinverksted was known for taking good care of its people and ahead of its times with respect to work environment and labour rights e.g. paid holidays, bonuses and inflation relief funds.
Two of the founders, Albert L. Barstad and Halfdan Abel-Lunde took retirement after having led the company for 39 years.
The name Stavanger Bliktrykkeri og Maskinverksted changed to Stavanger Bliktrykkeri.
A positive consumer growth in Norway made the company focus on tin cans for food and paint. The company invested in automatic welding machines and printing presses.
Stavanger Bliktrykkeri partnered with a French company called Cebal to develop deep drawn aluminium cans with easy opening lids.
With a flourishing partnership with Stavanger Bliktrykkeri, Cebal decided to buy the company. The name was changed to Skanem, which is a combination of two words, Scandinavia and Emballage. Skanem became the patent holder and first supplier of easy open lid for aluminium cans in Norway.
Ole Rugland was hired as Managing Director in March 1985 and acquired Skanem in August 1986.
With focus on metal packaging, Skanem was able to grow substantially in the Norwegian and Danish market.
Noblikk Sannem, the largest metal packaging company in Norway was acquired by Skanem.
Skanem expanded out of Norway and acquired Hydrocan and Nordisk Blik in Denmark and started to export deep drawn aluminium cans to mainland Europe and the far east.
With decreased demand of metal cans in Scandinavia, Skanem wanted to grow into new markets.
Skanem acquires SE labels.
Skanem sells most metal packaging and film companies, to focus solely on self-adhesive labels
Skanem moves into the Eastern European market by acquiring a print company named Introl in Russia and Poland.
Skanem builds own production plant in Bangkok to make a debut in the Asian market. The Bangkok plant was built to cater to a customer’s growing demand in the region.
Skanem identifies growing markets in Africa and India and therefore acquires Interlabels India and Interlabels Kenya.
Maryne Lemvik takes over as CEO of Skanem Group. Ole Rugland takes the position of Executive Chairman.
Skanem sells 9 factories in Europe and Thailand to MCC labels.
